Regulation (EU) 2024/1689: Artificial Intelligence Act

CATEGORIES

RISK-BASED PROCESS SAFETY ELEMENTS

Research Summary

The EU AI Act is a binding horizontal regulation for AI systems placed on the EU market or used in covered contexts. Its risk-based structure, high-risk obligations, transparency requirements, recordkeeping expectations, and human oversight concepts are directly relevant to organizations deploying AI in safety-critical or regulated industrial environments. While PSM regulations such as OSHA PSM and EPA RMP do not yet provide detailed AI-specific requirements, the EU AI Act offers a regulatory template that process-industry companies can use to anticipate expectations for AI governance, supplier controls, documentation, monitoring, and accountability. It is particularly relevant where AI could influence decisions about inspection, maintenance, hazard controls, operating limits, or compliance evidence. This is very comprehensive: the .PDF version is 144 pages.
