RISK-BASED PROCESS SAFETY ELEMENTS

Research Summary

ISO/IEC 42001:2023 is the first international management-system standard for artificial intelligence, specifying requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining, and continually improving an AI management system (AIMS). Built on the high-level structure shared by ISO management standards, it addresses AI policy, roles and responsibilities, risk and impact assessment, controls, lifecycle management, and continual improvement. Because Process Safety Management is itself a management-system discipline, ISO/IEC 42001 maps unusually well onto PSM practice: it provides an auditable governance scaffold for how an organization commits to, controls, and improves its use of AI in safety-critical work. For an AI-in-PSM resource it is a key guideline for operational governance—supporting 'Model MOC' (management of change for AI models), versioning and revalidation, audit trails, and clear assignment of accountability. Organizations already running ISO-aligned safety or quality systems can integrate an AIMS with comparatively little friction, embedding responsible-AI controls directly into established PSM workflows. It complements risk frameworks like the NIST AI RMF by turning principles into certifiable, repeatable management practice. The standard can be purchased at the www.iso.org website for CHF225.00.
