Artificial Intelligence — Guidance on Risk Management

CATEGORIES

RISK-BASED PROCESS SAFETY ELEMENTS

Research Summary

ISO/IEC 23894:2023 provides guidance for applying risk management principles to artificial intelligence. It extends general risk management concepts to AI-specific concerns such as data quality, model performance, transparency, monitoring, and lifecycle risk treatment. For Process Safety Management, the standard is relevant because AI introduces new failure modes that may not be captured by conventional equipment-centered hazard analysis. Examples include model drift, biased training data, invalid extrapolation, opaque recommendations, and loss of human situational awareness. The document can support an organization’s development of AI risk registers, validation expectations, deployment controls, and periodic reassessment practices for AI-enabled PSM tools. This standard can be purchased at the www.iso.org website for CHF155.00.
